Public Affairs Internship | Molly DeWyse

[music playing] Hi, I’m Molly. I’m a political science and Spanish major here at University of Michigan Dearborn. I recently did an internship at the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in my freshman year. So I was stationed in the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in downtown Detroit, where I was working in extraditions and juvenile lifers. So in extraditions, I was doing paperwork to get criminal criminals in and out of the state, in regards to charges in other states, or in Michigan. And then my supervisor also always encouraged me to go down and watch as much court as possible. I would go down and watch like for deer, or even just like the murder trials cross examinations, all of that helped me a lot. I got a lot of experience. I think that was the most important part of my internship was going and watching court. It really really like was the most interesting and fun part of my day and also sometimes I got assigned little side projects So I would listen to prison calls, I would do stuff for other attorneys, so I got to meet a lot of attorneys that way as well, which was really cool really good canvassing opportunity. I was also placed with the Juvenile Lifers project. So I would work directly with my supervisor to go through all of their files. To make sure that we had all the information that we needed to re-sentence them so they were sentenced to life in prison under the age of 18. So we had to go through look at all their files. So I would read the transcripts, the statements, everything like that. And I would that was really awesome to get really good experience with how the cases are processed and the way that we review cases in law. What really drove me to take an internship like this and what drew me to this program in general was I’ve always been super passionate about justice and equality in the in the legal system, and I wanted a first-hand experience at the prosecution side where they actually worked to keep criminals off the streets, and I also wanted to see if this was something that I would want to do in the future, and I really have always been passionate. I wanted to be a lawyer since I was five. I’ve known this about myself So I wanted to make sure that this was truly what I wanted to do, so that’s why I took this internship. [music playing]
