Local foundation helps fund service dog for police

THE FOUNDATION STARTED BY
LOCAL SPORTS LEGEND IS MAKING IT
POSSIBLE.>>AWW. ERIKA: A VISIT TO DISPATCH AND
SMILES ABOUND. STILL A PUPPY, THIS GOLDEN
RETRIEVER IS STARTING TO FEEL
VERY AT HOME AT THE SHARON
POLICE DEPARTMENT.>>ONE OF THE GOALS FOR SHARON
POLICE DEPARTMENT IS THAT WE
LOOK FOR DEEPER CONNECTIONS TO
THE COMMUNITY. ERIKA: THE COMMUNITY WAS
THRILLED WHEN RECENTLY SHARON
POLICE GOT THEIR FIRST CANINE,
BUCK, A BELGIAN MALINOIS. CHIEF JOHN FORD FOUND HIMSELF
FIELDING REQUESTS FOR
APPEARANCES NOT ALWAYS THE RIGHT
FIT FOR THIS GUY.>>HE’S TRAINED FOR PATROLS BUT
HE’S ALSO TRAINED TO BE AN
AGGRESSIVE DOG. ERIKA: THE CHIEF REALIZED A DOG
OF A DIFFERENT TEMPERAMENT COULD
BE BENEFICIAL. RE-ENTER FLUTIE, WHO’S BEING
TRAINED TO STAY CALM.>>SUDDEN MOVEMENTS AND NOISES. ERIKA: DE-ESCALATE TENSE
SITUATIONS.>>WE TEACH THEM TO PUT THEIR
HEAD DOWN NICE A HEAVY ON THE
LAP. ERIKA: PAULINE HOEGLER IS THE
FOUNDER OF GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES
FOR INDEPENDENE, WHERE SERVICE
DOGS ARE BRED AND TRAINED. FULL TRAINING CAN TAKE UP TO TWO
YEARS WITH DOGS COSTING ABOUT
$15,000. A BIG REASON SHARON POLICE ARE
GETTING FLUTIE IS THE FAMOUS
FAMILY H’S NAMED AFTE
>>IT WASN’T IN THEIR BUDGET
THIS YEAR SO WE WORKED WITH
THEM. ERIKA: NICK SAVARESE IS THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE DOUG
FLUTIE JR. FOUNDATION FOR
AUTISM. HE SPEAKS ABOUT THE FLUTIE’S
COMMITMENT TO HELPING OTHERS AND
THE SHARON POLICE DEPARTMENT’S.>>THEY WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT
OTHER FAMILIES HAD THE
OPPORTUNITIES THAT THEY COULD
PROVIDE FOR THEIR SON DOUGIE AND
THAT’S EVERYTHING FROM THERAPY
SERVICES TO OPPORTUNITIES FOR HEALTH, FITNESS. THERE IS A HIGH PREVALENCE OF
CHILDREN WITH AUTISM IN SHARON
AND THEY’VE REALLY BEEN AT THE
FOREFRONT IN ENSURING THAT
THEY’RE MAKING THEIR COMMUNITIES
SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE. ERIKA: THE DEPARTMENT FEELS
FLUTIE WILL BE ABLE TO HELP IN
ALL SORTS OF CIRCUMSTANCES. ONE EXAMPLE IS LEADING THE
SEARCH IF A PERSON WITH AUTISM
WANDERS AND GOES MISSING,
SOMETHING THAT CAN BE COMMON.>>AS OPPOSED TO A SHEPPARD THAT
COMES AND BARKS WHEN THEY FIND
THEIR PERSON, THEY COME UP AND
THEY WAG THEIR TAILS.>>THEY’RE EVERYTHING THAT WE
WANT TO BE AS HUMAN BEINGS. THEY LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY,
THEY’RE ALWAYS IN A GOOD MOOD. AND THEY DON’T TALK POLITICS. WHAT BETTER COULD YOU GET? ERIKA: DOGS LIKE FLUTIE HAVE
PROVEN THEIR POWER TO HELP
OTHERS SO MUCH SO THAT THE
NORFOLK COUNTY D.A. IS PROVIDING
FUNDING TO PLACE DOGS IN FOUR
LOCAL SCHOOL

  • Thank you for faking a service dog. It is against the law to use a service dog for anybody but yourself. That is not a service dog that is an emotional support animal. A service dog is a dog that is tasked trained to assist its disabled handler. The tasks must be directly related to the handlers disability.
