How well is Employment First spreading around the U.S.?

(upbeat music) – How well is Employment First
spreading around the U.S.? In 2017, researchers at
the University of Minnesota were interested in how
well Employment First was spreading around the United States. They looked at each state government to see what kind of
Employment First activities they had done to make sure
people with disabilities had chances to work in competitive
jobs in their community. Researchers learned that
some states were doing a lot to help people with
disabilities get good jobs in their community. A number of states passed new laws saying that everyone that wants to, should have a job in the community including all people with disabilities. As of 2017, they found that in 16 states the governor had made an executive order and 18 states had written new policies saying that people with disabilities had a right to have community jobs that paid at least minimum wage. Only one state had no new laws or policies stating that people with disabilities should work in the community. Even when a state didn’t have a formal Employment First activity, they found that there was a
lot of informal work happening. Much of it lead by
advocates, family members or employment professionals. The researchers at the
University of Minnesota plan to continue keeping track of what kinds of
Employment First activities are going on in different states. We know that people with
disabilities can and want to work. For far too long, employment
in real jobs in the community has not been a reality for
people with disabilities. Employment First is helping
make the changes necessary so that people who want to
work in the community can. (upbeat music)
